The yellow coat: becoming friends with colour

If you’re anything like me, black is your go-to colour, and even your best friend when it comes to clothes. Let’s face it: it is easy to use, flattering, and it never goes out of style. But one thing’s for sure, adding a little colour to your outfit from time to time can brighten it, as well as boosting your mood! Breaking patterns and sometimes getting out of your comfort zone can help you find new things you didn’t even know you could love. Right now, it’s the perfect moment to experiment with Pantone’s Colour of the Year, “Illuminating”, which is a stunning, bright shade of yellow.

I fully understand the fear of adding colour to your wardrobe if you are not used to it! The easiest way of doing this is choosing a colour you don’t fear as much (it doesn’t have to be yellow), and getting a statement piece in that shade. It could be a pair of shoes, a handbag, a necklace or, for example, a coat. Mixing it in with dark clothes will be easy and will add a spark to your look without making you feel overly exposed. Make sure to choose the piece according to what you want to draw everyone’s eyes to, as the colour will immediately direct their view. So, if you are proud of your chest, go for a necklace or a top; if you like to make a statement with what you wear on your feet, choose a brightly coloured pair of shoes. Experiment, have fun and just try! Seasons like autumn and winter are great to start with colours in a smaller way because it’s already a gloomy time where many choose to wear darker colours, so you can start with baby steps. It’s also the perfect time to choose a colourful coat. This is a great way to integrate a main vibrant shade to your clothing in a very fashionable way. Coats are the first thing people see when you are outside, so it’s also an item that will set you apart without making you look uncoordinated.

As for me, I’ve always loved coats that are striking, whether that’s due to colour, design or tailoring. It has been on my list for years to get both a red and a yellow coat. Finally, in 2018 I was able to get my hands on a beautiful yellow coat. It has a beautiful oversized hood which makes me feel a little bit witchy (in a very good way!) and reminds me of the kid from It (I’ve seriously thought about cosplaying him with this coat), and I just love it. At first, I paired it up with my usual black clothes, but then I went all out and I used it with a printed dress and red boots; the combo is still one of my faves so far and one I have received many compliments for. Actually, for all I thought I’d feel too visible in such vibrancy, wearing my yellow coat has brought me a lot of confidence and I always feel happier when I’m wearing it. Even though I never thought I was going to enjoy colour and print so much but I’ve found that sometimes you just have to go for it, don’t hold back! Now my yellow coat is a staple in my winter wardrobe and I can assure you that it makes all of my outfits better.

If you are even more daring, choosing a bright pair of trousers will instantly make you stand out. Once you have mastered the use of one colour, find ways to add more! Even if you’re new to colour, as long as you plan and test an outfit before you leave the house, you’ll always leave feeling confident, rather than being caught off guard, or regret a particularly bold choice throughout the day. Remember: they’re just clothes. There are no rules when it comes to fashion, even if a magazine tells you that red and pink may not go together. You do you, just make sure that you feel confident and beautiful when you are wearing your chosen colours. And if anything fails, black will always be the most iconic colour in fashion.

  1. Well I’ve never been one for yellow, nor much for colour, but because of you I did by a yellow scarf. Which I have been complimented on by quite a few people. I’d definitely still not say it was within my comfort zone, but I minded it less than I’d expect and yes… It did look good, if I do say so myself! This was a fun post!!
